Owatrol ALU (formally Owatrol GLV) is a highly flexible, anti-corrosive coating with a high gloss finish that possesses the deeply penetrating and adhesion properties of Marine Oil so the finish will not peel or flake and will even adhere well to clean, bright steel.
Owatrol ALU marine aluminum paint will restore rusted and corroded surfaces to an acceptable appearance to give lasting protection and greatly prolong the life of the treated surface. It has excellent resistance to the effects of the weather and does not emit harmful fumes so can be applied even in confined spaces.
With excellent abrasion resistance, Owatrol ALU can withstand a chemical attack and is ideal in aggressive climatic conditions where a highly resistant finish is necessary. Originally developed for the shipping industry Owatrol ALU became a favorite cargo hold coating; carrying approval for the carriage of grain. It can withstand temperatures up to 347°F (175°C) once cured and offers excellent light and heat-reflecting properties.
Owatrol ALU leaves a highly elastic surface which will not crack or peel and galvanized surfaces do not require weathering or pickling first. Sand or shot-blasted surfaces don’t even need an immediate application as a light coating of rust will not affect performance or the finished result.
Ideal uses for Owatrol ALU marine aluminum paint
- Coating aluminum, steel and galvanized surfaces above the waterline
- Protecting already rusted tanks and machinery
- Resisting damage in aggressive climatic conditions
- Resisting weathering effects on pipes and pumps
- Providing long-lasting protection against corrosion for new steelwork
Application tools
- Brush
- Roller
- Airless Sprayer (0.4 mm x 80˚ @ 1860-2000 psi (128-138 bars))
Surface Preparation
First, all surfaces must be clean, dry and free from oil, grease and other surface contaminants. Remove all scale; loose and flaking rust and old paint back to a sound surface and edge and feather in any sharp edges. Surfaces exposed to chemicals (acids, alkalis or salt deposits) should be washed using copious amounts of water or steam cleaned. Severely contaminated surfaces should be cleaned using an appropriate solvent.
Applying Owatrol ALU marine aluminium paint
Stir or shake the can well before and during use. Do not thin.
Applying Owatrol ALU to new steel & aluminium
Prime new steel with 1 coat of Marine Oil and allow to dry for 24 hours. Then apply 1 coat of Owatrol ALU. For new steel or aluminium that will be subject to aggressive climatic conditions, a 2nd coat is advisable.
Applying Owatrol ALU to clean, lightly rusted or new unpainted rusty steel
Apply 2 coats of Owatrol ALU allowing drying time between coats.
Applying Owatrol ALU to old severely rusted surfaces
Apply wet on wet applications of Marine Oil until the rust is fully saturated and allow to dry. Saturation is indicated by a uniform glossy appearance to the surface when the Marine Oil is dry. Next, apply 2 coats of Owatrol ALU allowing drying time between coats.
Applying Owatrol ALU to previously coated surfaces
Spot prime all exposed metal with Marine Oil or 1 coat of Owatrol ALU depending on the severity of the rust and allow to dry. Next, apply 2 coats of Owatrol ALU over the entire area; allowing drying time between coats.
Maintenance
Maintenance is easy and frequency will depend on the conditions that the coated surface is exposed to. Thoroughly clean all surfaces to be coated ensuring any oil, grease and other surface contaminants are removed. Remove all loose and flaking material and feather in any sharp edges.
Then apply a single application of Owatrol ALU to all areas where exposed metal or rust is showing through and allow to dry. If desired a further application of Owatrol ALU may be applied to the entire surface.
Clean Up
Clean all tools and equipment with mineral spirits while still wet. If allowed to dry, remove with paint stripper. Store and maintain equipment as directed by the manufacturer.
NOTE: Any rags, steel wool etc soaked in Owatrol ALU may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. Rags, steel wool etc must be saturated with water after use or placed in a sealed, water-filled metal container, before disposing with household waste.
Things to Remember
- Cover everything you do not wish to paint
- Apply between 41°F (5°C) and 95°F (35°C)
- Do not apply in direct sunlight or on to hot surfaces
Applying to wood surfaces
New Surfaces
Simply apply 2 coats allowing drying time between coats.
Damaged, soft, punky or porous wood surfaces
First, prime with Owatrol Oil and allow to dry. Next, apply 2 coats of ALU allowing drying time between coats.
Previously coated surfaces
Spot prime all exposed surfaces with Owatrol Oil and allow to dry.
Next, apply Owatrol ALU to the primed areas to bring them level with the existing finish, allowing drying time between coats.
Finally, apply 2 coats of ALU over the entire area; allowing drying time between coats.
Coverage
Coverage 18m² per litre.
Actual coverage will vary depending on type, texture and porosity of surface as well as the application method.
